Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens Launches Emergency Response Program for Furloughed Federal Workers and Families Losing SNAP Benefits
Brooklyn, NY, October 29, 2025 — Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens (CCBQ) has launched an emergency response for those affected by the government shutdown. Anyone in need can access food, mental health support, and case management. These services are available for those impacted by the government furlough, the loss of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits on November 1, 2025, or similar challenges.
“No family should have to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table,” said Rev. Msgr. Alfred LoPinto, President and CEO of Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens. “We have mobilized our network of food pantries and social services to make sure anyone struggling during the shutdown can access emergency support right away.”
The following emergency services are now available to anyone impacted by the government shutdown:
• All 60 pantry locations in Brooklyn and Queens are open to anyone affected. No appointment is needed to get food.
• Caseworkers and benefit coordinators help families access emergency funds. Emergency grants are available for assistance on a case-by-case basis.
• Call 718-722-6001 to speak with staff for information, referrals, and access to case managers and over 160 programs and services. Those in need of mental health support due to stress or anxiety related to the shutdown can contact The Call Center to connect with CCBQ’s Mental Health Clinics.
From January to September 2025, CCBQ’s food pantries served more than 450,000 people and distributed over 4 million meals across Brooklyn and Queens. “Our pantries are already serving thousands each week, and we added extra meals and services to our operations,” said Debbie Hampson, Senior Director of Community and Mobile Outreach Services. “We have the infrastructure and commitment to ensure no one in our community goes hungry.”
