Event provided over 200 backpacks, school supplies, fresh produce, and family resources to community
Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens hosted its 18th Annual Kids Fun Day on Friday, August 21, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parking Lot in Astoria, Queens. The cherished community event helps local families prepare for the upcoming school year.
The free event welcomed families with children ages 5 to 17, offering a wide range of activities and resources. Attendees had access to information about Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens’ services and partner organizations, school supplies and backpacks, fresh produce boxes.
Since 2008, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens have distributed school supplies and backpacks to more than 10,000 children and families in Queens through its annual Kids Fun Day. This year’s event provided over 200 backpacks filled with school supplies to children in attendance.
“Thanks to this amazing event we had hundreds in attendance, serving over 220 children!” said Debbie Hampson, Senior Director of Community Outreach Services at Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens.
Fun activities, games and a live DJ provided entertainment to families and children. Special guest appearances by Mr. Met of the NY Mets, St. John’s University Johnny Thunderbird, and a demonstration of Brazilian Jiujitsu by the children from Gentle Art Studio Astoria.
Beyond providing essential resources, Kids Fun Day plays a vital role in strengthening community bonds. The annual celebration not only supports families during the back-to-school season but also reflects Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens’ ongoing commitment to fostering a supportive, connected community throughout the year.
