Members of the Catholic Charities Seaside Older Adult Center recently gathered to commemorate Juneteenth, the country’s second Independence Day, and learn about its history. The celebration included a variety of activities, such as reading books that shed light on the significance of this special day and watching a short video that provided further insights.
Juneteenth is an important holiday that dates back to June 19, 1865, when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger and Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, bringing with them news that the war had ended and that the last enslaved people in the United States were finally free. This long-awaited announcement came 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation officially went into effect on January 1, 1863, and it marked a significant turning point in American history.
