Nearly 11K Meals Distributed at Emergency Pop-Up Food Distribution

Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens Provides Nearly 11,000 Meals at an Emergency Pop-Up Food Distribution to Individuals in the Epicenter of the Coronavirus Pandemic

Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens provided 1,200 bags of food, nearly 11,000 meals at an Emergency Pop-Up Food Distribution on Friday, May 1, 2020 at St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church in Elmhurst, Queens – the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic and blocks away from Elmhurst Hospital.

According to the New York City Department of Health, as of April 28, Queens has 49,559 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 4,817 reported deaths, the most in New York City. Brooklyn and Queens account for nearly 60 percent of all COVID-19 cases in the New York metropolitan area. Elmhurst is one of the most ethnically diverse zip codes in the United States.

In the past three and a half weeks, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has provided over 40,300 meals at emergency Pop-Up Food Distributions in Brooklyn and Queens. In addition, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has also provided over 100,000 meals at our food pantries in both boroughs and we are seeing 100 percent increase in demand for food at our existing food pantries.

Individuals received bags of food at the grab-and-go style event and access to additional assistance, information, and resources, including outreach material encouraging a severely undercounted community to participate and self-respond to the 2020 Census.

Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens is responding to the hardworking families in this and other impoverished immigrant neighborhoods by providing pop-up food pantries, access to supportive services via our call center and behavioral health services via tele-health.

The Emergency Pop-Up Food Distribution is organized and funded by Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens as a direct response to our neighbors in need in both boroughs. To help, donate to Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens at www.ccbq.org.
