Message from CEO on AHCA

Message from Rev. Msgr. Alfred LoPinto, President & CEO of Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens, on AHCA
Congress is prepared to make significant changes to our country’s health care laws, which will impact the poor and vulnerable, particularly those on Medicaid.  As an agency that serves thousands of families in need, it is imperative that we speak out to preserve life-saving safety net programs that will be impacted by the proposed American Health Care Act (AHCA).
Sr. Donna Markham, President and CEO of Catholic Charities USA, recently sent a letter to the House of Representatives that clearly articulates Catholic Charities agencies’ concerns about the AHCA, which may be up for a vote tomorrow.
New York State’s Medicaid Director just released data about how the AHCA would impact New Yorkers, and the numbers are alarming:
2.7 million New Yorkers will lose health care coverage
New York’s total loss in Medicaid funding would amount to $6.9 billion
Nursing Home Payments would be cut by $401 million
Home care payments would be cut by $360 million
Hospital payments would be cut by $355 million
Again, as an agency that serves thousands of families that would be impacted by such changes, we see these drastic cuts as unacceptable and immoral. The community is strongly encouraged to call Congress and urge them to vote “no” on the AHCA.
