Catholic Charities Disaster Response

Because of climate change we recognize that natural disasters are becoming a more frequent occurance. We at Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens have an obligation to be part of the catholic charities disaster response and to help assist those in our community who are more vulnerable from the impact of disaster like fires, hurricanes, storms, flooding and even man-made crisis.

CCBQ participates with many other city-wide organizations to prepare and coordinate Catholic Charities Disaster Response. We do this through the NYC Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (NYC-VOAD). Working alongside the NYC Organization for Emergency Management (OEM) we are ready to offer our communities preparation and assistance in times of crisis.

When crisis happens, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens will be actively involved along with our VOAD Partners throughout the city. We encourage our own diocesan network to also be aware of ways that they can both be prepared and be ready to assist the community at large. Here are two suggestions that OEM encourages.

  • Especially if you are a parish in an area that may be at risk for natural disasters we encourage you to have a local parish team download and consult the Community Emergency Plan Toolkit for NYC Community and Faith-Based Networks.CCBQ can partner with these local parish teams to mobilize their response as needed.

  • The Share Your Space Survey is a way that our facilities can be ready to assist the greater good of the community if necessary. Whether as an emergency cooling center, a gathering space for organizing the community, or as a disaster recovery center for the community.
