Community Programming

In these tough economic times, programs that support independence, self-determination and dignity are especially valuable. Our Community Programming Services help individuals and families move beyond emergencies to more stable and stronger home lives. Workshops, trainings and support groups are conducted throughout the year on topics such as employment, financial literacy, women’s initiatives, veteran support groups and parenting. The social services we offer are extended via our mobile sites, which serve hard-to-reach parish communities in Brooklyn and Queens.  We also work closely with nearly 200 Diocesan parishes and more than 30 parish clusters to address community issues such as affordable housingemergency preparedness, health care, and immigration, and provide connection to ournetwork of food pantries for those in need.

Community Programming Services hosts many community events, including an Earth Day Celebration (each April) with helpful tips on keeping our environment safe; Kid's Fun Day in the late summer, a very popular "back-to-school" block-party styled event; and, around the holiday season, turkey and meal distributions for Thanksgiving, and Visit with Santa, which features toy distribution and photos with Santa.

Please support our vital work with a tax-deductible donation today. As one of the nation’s most efficient nonprofits, 91 cents of every dollar you give goes straight to programs like these that help our neediest neighbors.

Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens’ network of 20 Food Pantries provide food assistance to many families and individuals in need throughout Brooklyn and Queens. Last year, our pantries helped distribute more than 1 million meals to over 115,000 people. If you are in need of emergency food assistance, please visit a food pantry near you.

The Mommy & Me (Mami y yo) Program is a weekly support group that works to break the cycle of poverty by providing low-income pregnant women and parents with young children under the age of four with the support they need to raise healthy children.  Mothers and their babies are nurtured throughout pregnancy and beyond.  The group presently has a total of 30 participants who share their experiences, are given resources and information on parenting, health child milestones and nutrition.  They are taught effective parenting, discipline and communications. The group also includes trips and creative crafts. Trips have included the movies, the Hall of Science, the Museum of Moving Imagery and a “Make Your Own Pizza” class at Pizzeria UNO’s Chicago Grill.  At the conclusion of the year, each participant received a certificate of completion.  Mommy & Me also welcomes fathers to participate.
Catholic Charities provides education on nutrition, early prenatal care, baby safety, and positive parenting, and empower and encourage parents to get an education, and achieve their goals for a better life for themselves and their children.  As one young mom said, “I was encouraged to be a strong independent woman and to make healthy choices.”
This program is funded by the Maternity and Early Childhood Foundation (MECF).
