St. John’s University Volunteers Host an Exciting Day for Catholic Charities’ Seniors

The Catholic Charities Catherine Sheridan Senior Residence in Astoria, Queens and the Catholic Charities St. Louis Senior Center in Crown Heights, Brooklyn hosted St. John’s University volunteers on Saturday, September 29th, as part of the University's 11th Annual Day of Service.
At the Catherine Sheridan Senior Residence, eleven volunteers helped the seniors clear weeds and debris from their rooftop garden and replant seasonal mums, generously donated by The Home Depot. Afterward, the St. John's students served a hot dog lunch to the Catherine Sheridan residents in their roomy community lounge.
Meanwhile, at the Catholic Charities St. Louis Senior Center, ten St. John's Students participated in an energetic Zumba workout session with the seniors.  The volunteers also assisted in teaching a Saturday computer class, as well as participated in  information sessions on healthy eating and self-care. To end the day, a festive luncheon was served by the volunteers.
It was also National Senior Center Month, and to honor this, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke and New York State Assemblyman Karim Camara were on hand to show support to the 90 seniors and helpful volunteers in attendance.
Thanks to our community partnerships with St. John’s University and The Home Depot, seniors at our Catherine Sheridan Senior Residence and St. Louis Senior Center will continue to feel at home in a welcoming and beautiful environment.
