Helping Our Residents Stay Healthy with Health Bucks
Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens is participating in the New York City Department of Health’s Health Bucks Program. Health Bucks, coupons worth $2 each, are distributed by the NYC Department of Health and can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at all farmers markets in NYC. NYC farmers’ markets provide an opportunity for residents to buy fresh and affordable produce while supporting regional farmers.
A great initiative for our neighbors in need, Catholic Charities has enlisted to provide Health Bucks to our tenants in our single room occupancy residences for the formerly homeless. So far, residents in Mercy Gardens SRO and St. Joseph’s SRO have been using Health Bucks to purchase fresh produce from the farmer’s market in their Brooklyn neighborhood.
Most recently, the residents of our Mercy Gardens SRO participated in a Farm Stand Tour where they browsed healthy fruit and vegetable options and purchased some to take home. This tour allowed those who spent $5.00 or more to receive one more Health Buck! The tenants were very excited to use their purchases to make smoothies or side dishes for their dinners.
