The Catholic Charities Queens Community Center commemorated Earth Day 2012 in Astoria Queens by hosting their Third Annual Earth Day Celebration. Joined by Robert Siebel, Catholic Charities’ CEO, this festivity was dedicated to educating the community on the many ways they can ‘Go Green’ and conserve our environment.
Mr. Siebel and the children participated in loads of fun and educational activities such as a fishing game, flower planting, recycling games, and necklace crafting. Over 100 parents and children attended along with many community partners. The Home Depot, our long standing corporate partner, generously donated the pots, plants, and soil for the planting activities. Fidelis Health Care distributed water bottles, granola, oranges, and other healthy snacks for the children. The Fresh Air Fund was also on hand to provide summer camp information to the parents. The children went home with cool giveaways and facts on how they can help our planet. In continuation of earth day, the Queens Food Pantry has kicked of a reusable bag campaign, encouraging food pantry guests to use cloth bags instead of plastic. The pantry used over 400 plastic bags per day.
