Services for People with Developmental Disabilities

Care and Support in a Nurturing Environment

Catholic Charities serves people with developmental disabilities in Brooklyn and Queens who live at home with their families or caregivers. Among the services we provide to the developmentally disabled are comprehensive case management, home and community services waivers and family support case management. We also provide residences for developmentally disabled adults offering 24 hour supervision, daily skills training, recreation and a variety of psychological, social and clinical services, such as medical care and speech training.

Every day, qualified and competent staff members provide comprehensive social services mixed with warm, friendly emotional support to people with developmental disabilities as well as to their caregivers. At our 21 residences for the developmentally disabled, individuals receive 24-hour supervised care while living independently and experiencing real autonomy.

We also seek to provide people with disabilities meaningful leisure activities which are intellectually and personally stimulating. We place an emphasis on providing an environment in which our clients make their own choices and pursue their own interests, including ceramics, crafts, art, woodworking, movement to music and bowling. Adult education and skill enhancement is provided, as well as weekly community trips to concerts, museums, parks and libraries.

Please support our vital work with a tax-deductible donation today.  As one of the nation’s most efficient nonprofits, 91 cents of every dollar you give goes straight to programs like these that help our neediest neighbors.

Straus Residence is a ICF facility in a beautiful building at 3730 Shore Parkway. This building houses 10 individuals. At Straus Residence what the team tries to do is promote unity. "As a multi-service organization, Catholic Charities uses its commitment to service as a vehicle for the promotion of participation and involvement of people in the service of others. By bringing people together to know, to experience and to reflect upon the needs and issues of local communities, the agency seeks to raise consciousness and encourages input and involvement. The responses it generates draws people together and promotes the caring, unity and witness which characterizes the Christian ministry of service."  Here at Straus, what we seek to do is create among the staff a community of caring and sharing made up of people who seek to reach out to the poor, sick, aged, isolated handicapped and alienated. In addition, our staff is determined to maintain an open line of communication with the individuals we care for and their families!
