CATHOLIC CHARITIES BROOKLYN & QUEENS
BIG BROTHERS/BIG SISTERS
THANK YOUR MENTOR DAY
In honor of National Mentoring Month in January, the Catholic
Charities Brooklyn & Queens Big Brothers/Big Sisters program
recently held a Thank Your Mentor Day at St. Francis College,
Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn. The celebration was an opportunity
to honor all the “Bigs” and “Littles,”
as well as the parents/guardians in the program. Everyone shared
appreciation for the invaluable work of these volunteers who positively
affect children in need of a trusted friend and a caring adult
in their lives while parents/guardians are unavailable due to
long work hours or other predicaments.
The event is especially a time for the Littles to express their
gratitude to their Bigs. One such activity that encouraged this
communication was writing postcards. Victoria, age 10, wrote to
her Big Sister: “You’ve been such a wonderful big
sister to me. You’ve supported me in everything important
to me. I really appreciate all the hard work you have done for
us. I just wanted to say I appreciate you and care for you the
same way you do for me!” Other activities included arts
& crafts, games, raffles and prizes. Fun music and delicious
food were also enjoyed by the attendees.
St. Francis College donated the space for the event. Other sponsors
from the community included Monty Q’s Brick Oven Pizza,
Court Order, La Bagel Delight, La Traviata, My Little Pizzeria,
and Lassen & Hennigs, which donated food and drink. Raffle
prizes, including tickets to sports events and off-Broadway shows,
were donated by the Advisory Board.
For more than 90 years, Big Brothers/Big Sisters has been America’s
pre-eminent national youth organization. Volunteers serve as friends,
mentors and positive role models, helping children gain greater
self-confidence, achieve success in school and reach their potential.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters mentors have influenced the lives of
over one million children in thousands of communities across the
nation. For further information on Catholic Charities Brooklyn
