CATHOLIC CHARITIES BROOKLYN & QUEENS
DAY OF RECOLLECTION FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
Catholic Charities Brooklyn & Queens, Office of Pastoral
Services, will be holding its Annual Day of Recollection for persons
with disabilities, on Saturday, February 25, 2006 from 9:30 a.m.
to 4:15 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Center, 7200 Douglaston
Parkway, Douglaston, NY. For directions: 718-229-8001, ext. 427.
Those who are coming on their own should make their own travel
arrangements or come by Access-A-Ride. You should ask AAR for
an appointment/arrival time of 9:45 a.m. and a return pick-up
time after 4:30 p.m.
The Day is free of any charge, although a free will offering
is gladly accepted at the Mass. The Day is planned for those who
are hearing, visually or mobility impaired and for the Deaf. The
day includes coffee and . . . at arrival, a Presentation, a Penance
Service with an opportunity for individual confession, Hot Lunch,
Quiet Time for personal prayer, Free Time for socialization, and
the Day ends with a Closing Mass beginning at 3:00 p.m. There
will be a separate track in American Sign Language [ASL] for the
Deaf. The Mass [and other parts of the day as well] will be verbally
described for the Blind and the Visually Impaired. One of the
more interesting elements of this celebration is that People with
Disabilities assume many of the liturgical ministries of the Mass
[and do a good job!].
The building at Douglaston is completely wheelchair accessible,
with automatic entrance doors, and including many wheelchair accessible
rest rooms. There will be numerous volunteers to assist the disabled.
The Presenter for the Physically Challenged will be Msgr. Fernando
Ferrarese, Vicar for Brooklyn East. He will also be the Main Celebrant
and Homilist of the Mass. Deacon Patrick Graybill of the Diocese
of Rochester will be the Presenter to the Deaf and the Deacon
of the Mass.
If you plan to attend, call Julia [718-722-6113] or Shaney [718-722-6112]
or TTY [718-722-6226] at Catholic Charities or contact your Parish
Advocate for Persons with Disabilities [they will organize their
parish attendance]. We especially need to know the planned attendance
to have a count for the food.
