CATHOLIC
CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
HELPS BREAK THE CYCLE OF POVERTY
To Break the Cycle of Poverty, the Catholic Campaign for Human
Development (CCHD) in the Diocese of Brooklyn has funded projects
that address root causes of poverty, as well as those that seek
to empower the poor, the disabled, minorities, workers and immigrants.
In honor of these community groups and their efforts, CCHD in
the Diocese of Brooklyn held an Awards Reception at the Bishop’s
Residence, 241 Clinton Avenue in Brooklyn, on Tuesday, November
7th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
One of the local CCHD-funded groups is the Fifth Avenue Committee.
Among its many accomplishments, it has succeeded in establishing
fair pricing for low-income workers who wish to open bank accounts
for the first time.
Other local CCHD-funded groups include: Southside Community Mission
(Churches United for Fair Housing), whose advocacy was key in
the City’s promise to provide 35% affordable housing in
the five boroughs; Community Action Project (CAP), which addresses
immigration fraud; Families United for Racial and Economic Equality
(FUREE); Queens Congregations United for Action, advocating on
issues including affordable housing and traffic safety; Centro
Hispano ‘Cuzcatlan’, addressing tenants’ rights;
and Southwest Brooklyn Congregations, bringing together immigrants
and long-time residents across diverse faiths and traditions on
community issues.

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is
a social justice program which supports projects that help poor
and low-income people help themselves. Eight-six cents out of
every dollar received by CCHD goes directly to community empowerment,
economic development, and education programs that work to break
the cycle of poverty. CCHD in the Diocese of Brooklyn
is holding a collection in parishes on November 18-19, 2006.
