CATHOLIC CHARITIES BROOKLYN & QUEENS
CELEBRATES
A “ROSIE’S” 100th BIRTHDAY
One of the “Rosies,” native New Yorker Caroline Cody
celebrates her 100th birthday on Monday, April 25, 2005.
Born April 25, 1905 in Astoria, Queens, Ms. Cody was one of
the American women laborers during World War II who were spurred
on to enter the war-production industry by higher wages and propaganda
posters featuring a muscle-bound “Rosie the Riveter”
exclaiming “We Can Do It!” She worked for American
Airlines in 1942 as one of the first female airplane mechanics,
and remained at her post for 28 years. In 1974 she joined the
Catholic Charities Brooklyn & Queens Steinway Senior Center—she
was the 8th member to sign up. Ms. Cody has volunteered at the
Steinway Senior Center for the last 25 years. She continues to
help sign in members, serve lunch and count contributions. In
addition, during her free time she crochets blankets for the center’s
fundraisers.
An amazing and warmhearted individual, Ms. Cody was married to
a New York City Police Officer and had four sons, all of who have
passed. She has nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Catholic Charities Brooklyn & Queens thanks Ms. Cody for
her commitment and generosity throughout the years, and wishes
her a happy and blessed 100th birthday.
